Papa Westray is a place to take your time. Join us to walk the coast, lose yourself in the wilds of Papay’s North Hill, take a pilgrimage around the loch and immerse yourself in a world of winter wildlife.

We’ll come across a wide range of waders & wildfowl, including Tysties, Great Northern Divers and Red-breasted Mergansers. Grey and Common Seals always deserve attention. Our resident Otters are notoriously elusive, but we will be looking carefully.

Should the sea state be calm, we’ll wrap up warm and watch in hope of passing Risso’s Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises. The drama of a winter storm could be an invigorating highlight.

We will get to all corners of the island, but this is not a holiday where covering ground is the main objective. How much time can we spend studying a stone? What is growing on it? What is underneath? We offer time to stand and stare – and warm hospitality and shelter, so a relief from the worst of the elements is never far away.
