Soak in the island atmosphere while learning about the rich range of birds that breed around our coasts. Papay is the perfect place for this, thanks to the diversity and accessibility of the local seabird population.

This holiday is for everyone who enjoys birds, whether you have been birding for a few years, or if you are an absolute beginner who just wants to know more. Papay has a small colony of Razorbills, Guillemots, Puffins and Shags. You will also see the statue commemorating the tragic demise of the last breeding pair of Great Auk in Britain, which were killed here in 1812 and 1813. Tysties (Black Guillemots) abound around the coast of Papay, and Great Skuas (Bonxies), Arctic Skuas, Sandwich Terns, Arctic Terns, Kittiwakes, Gannets, Eiders, Red-breasted Mergansers and a host of wader species can all be guaranteed.

If the weather allows, we shall see if we can get to the uninhabited Holm of Papay. Another special element of this holiday is a visit to Westray, to see Puffins at Castle o’ Burrian and the huge seabird city on Noup Cliffs. There are thousands of auks and Kittiwakes nesting at Noup, as well as the spectacle of Orkney’s only accessible Gannet colony.

Flowers will be at their peak during this holiday, and will not be ignored. As with the Papay Wildlife Club holidays, knowledge of the full breadth of Papay’s wildlife – from flies and fungi to seals and dolphins – will be on hand. Each evening there will be sessions on bird identification, wildlife talks or another gentle guided walk, or you may prefer time to yourself on the long summer evenings.
