The weekend starts with a craft workshop on the Friday afternoon at the Community School for all ages. On Friday evening there’s the annual Shindig, with wraps/tortillas, live music and a informal dance. Saturday afternoon is dedicated to picnic, sports and stalls, including an obstacle course, various races, a football match and tug-of-war, as well as face-painting, the ‘Eliminator’ and a bouncy castle. There’s a dance on Saturday evening at the Community School with John P and the Westray Band, which includes a buffet meal, licensed bar and a raffle. On Sunday we have carty races doon the brae, with times and knockout races for the free-wheeling carts, which come in all shapes and sizes. The Stromness RBL Pipe Band will be ‘piping the carts in’ between the Kirk and Beltane, and will play afterwards at Bothican or South Wick beach, where there will be a picnic and sand sculpture competition. The weekend rounds off with a premiere screening of ‘The Papa Westray Great Auk’ at the Kelp Store followed by a family film at the Papay cinema. There’s soup, sandwiches and home bakes at the Kirk on Saturday and Sunday lunchtime and afternoon tea on Saturday. There are the usual scheduled planes and boats over the weekend, plus an excursion boat on Sunday and a late sailing back to Westray on Saturday night.
