SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: An Overview of the overlooked
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of Papay’s lower ‘plants’ – fungi\, lichens\, mosses & liverworts – from waxcaps and Sea Ivory to the Sphagnum of Orkney’s largest maritime heath.\nYour holiday will introduce you to the beauty and diversity of some of Papay’s smallest growing inhabitants. We’ll look at lichens on dykes\, the shore and heathland; learn the differences between mosses and liverworts and identify some of the characteristic species; and study fungi associated with grassland\, maritime heathland and Papay’s native woodland – the one inch tall ‘forest’ of Creeping Willow to be found on North Hill. Alongside introductory evening talks on lichens\, mosses & liverworts and fungi\, you will also hear about the weird and wonderful Slime Mould Kingdom\, and hopefully see Mucilago crustacea for which Troll’s Vomit would be a good English name. \nAlthough the focus of our three days of gentle walking and peering at rocks and the ground will be on these tiny lifeforms over\, there will also be the chance to take in other special seasonal wildlife on Papay. Along the shore there will be a wide range of winter waders & wildfowl\, including Tysties (Black Guillemots)\, Great Northern Divers and Red-breasted Mergansers. For those of you with an interest in larger mammals\, this is a great place for watching Grey and Common Seals\, although our resident Otters tend to be rather more elusive. \nIn the evenings\, along with talks and identification sessions\, we will also make the most of Papay’s dark skies\, if the weather obliges. Will we see the ‘merry dancers’? – the island is a perfect observation point for the Aurora Borealis. \nPrice: £495 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: Finding Migrants
DESCRIPTION:The open landscape of Papa Westray provides an autumn treasure trove for the migrant ‘hunter’. This holiday is designed to give guests the best chance of seeing an eclectic mix of species\, while learning the secrets of finding birds on passage.\nAll are welcome on this holiday\, be they experienced birders wanting to hone their skills in the unfamiliar setting of a remote island with a good record for the unexpected\, or those just starting out in birdwatching and wanting a new challenge to further their skills and enthusiasm. \nYour leader\, Julian Branscombe\, is inspired by the thrill of finding birds as they visit Papa Westray on their journey. Identification challenges will be tackled and you will join him in carefully quartering the island\, trying to see as full a possible a cross-section of the birds which are here at any moment. \nThis holiday coincides with the first anniversary of the first sighting of Britain’s first Chestnut Bunting on the island in October 2015. Rare birds are rare – and cannot be expected – but Papay has an enviable record of attracting vagrant birds from the Americas\, the Arctic\, the furthest reaches of Asia or the Mediterranean. \nThe range of migrants present will depend largely on the weather patterns. This is a good time to see a rush of Redwing and Fieldfares\, heading south. Amongst the smaller passerines\, the typical late autumn fare of Goldcrests\, Blackcap and Chiffchaffs could be augmented by something scarce like a Black Redstart or a Great Grey Shrike. Seabirds can provide further interest\, particularly in the aftermath of a storm from the north-west\, and the island’s lochs and shores also support a good range of waders and wildfowl. \nAs ever\, the island’s rich archaeology will be on show\, and due note will also be paid to all other forms of wildlife to be found. This is a great time of year for fungi. Late-flowering plants and each morning’s moth trap contents are also amongst all that will be on offer. \nEach evening will include talks about Papay’s birds\, and the challenges of bird finding up here on the edge of the North Atlantic. Tips on fieldcraft\, and how to best ‘work’ the terrain\, combined with insights into identifying tricky species and help with bird calls\, are the perfect complement to putting these skills into practice the following day. The expertise and identification resources will also be on hand to identify any other wildlife encountered\, from cetaceans to Sepsid flies. \nPrice: £495 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. Email – papayranger@gmail.com Facebook – papay ranger.

SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: Be a Better Birder
DESCRIPTION:Few places can compete with Papay in offering such a varied and distinctive birdwatching experience in such a characterful and compact area. This is the perfect holiday for birders wanting to immerse themselves in the birds of the far north\, at the most ornithologically-exciting time of the year.\nThis is a holiday for everyone with a passion for birds. Birders of all abilities will find plenty to learn. Our time will be particularly tailored to increase the knowledge and confidence of those with little experience of coastal birds or finding and identifying passage migrants. \nYour leader\, Julian Branscombe\, has an equal passion for Papa Westray’s birds\, and helping visiting birders deal with the day-to-day challenges of the exciting birdwatching to be enjoyed here. What falcon is that? How do I sort out ducks in eclipse plumage? Are small waders really that hard? Is that a chiffchaff? How can I tell Twite and Linnet apart in autumn? What’s that dot passing out to sea? Come and unravel the mix of knowledge of skill and experience that is required to answer questions like these. \nThis holiday is timed to give us a chance of seeing the first Yellow-browed Warblers of autumn\, on their now regular passage through the northern isles. Pink-footed Geese and Whooper Swans will be coming through from Iceland and beyond. The last of the breeding Bonxies (Great Skuas) should still be on North Hill\, while resident species such as Tysties (Black Guillemots)\, Eiders and Fulmars will abound. If the winds are right\, we can expect an interesting passage of shearwaters\, and perhaps a petrel or two. \nPapay has an enviable record of attracting vagrant birds from the Americas\, the Arctic\, the furthest reaches of Asia or the Mediterranean. Whilst scarce or rare visitors can never be guaranteed\, the potential for surprise adds much to this Papay Wildlife Club holiday. And as always with PWC\, guests will also have the chance to experience the island’s archaeology\, see scarce plants like Scottish Primrose (Primula scotica) and Northern Yellow-cress\, and find out about the island’s great variety of other life\, from fungi and lichens to moths and seals. \nEach evening will include talks about Papay’s birds\, and the particular identification challenges which we’ll face. Fieldcraft tips and insights into identifying tricky species and help with bird calls are the perfect complement to putting these skills into practice the following day. The full Papay Wildlife Club library and resources\, from hand lenses to a microscope\, will also be on hand for anyone wishing to be diverted by the isle’s other natural history fascinations. \nPrice: £495 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: The Sea around Papay
DESCRIPTION:The influence of the sea is ever-present on Papay\, and this Papay Wildlife Club holiday focuses on the varied and fascinating marine wildlife of shore and inshore waters\, from lobsters to seals and from seaweed to sea slugs.\nPapa Westray is defined by the surrounding sea\, from the sheltered waters of Papa Sound and North and South Wick\, to the exposed meeting place of the Atlantic and the Fair Isle Channel\, off North Hill. We’ll be looking at all aspects of sealife\, through rockpooling\, examining seashore lichens\, watching seabirds\, collecting and identifying seaweeds\, experimenting with underwater cameras and seeing what is brought in by the island’s creel boat. \nBeachcombing will also feature\, giving us another opportunity to immerse ourselves in aspects of marine wildlife\, without getting wet. Learn about ‘Warey Matlos’ (kelp flies) and marine millipedes. Identify shells and skate and dogfish egg cases. Look for plant remains which have floated all the way across the Atlantic. We shall also find out about the journey that marine litter makes to Papa Westray. If you want\, you can help us clear a sack or two of plastic off our beaches\, leaving the marine ecosystem that tiny bit healthier as a result of this holiday. \nProviding the weather allows\, we shall take the Papay Development Trust’s new boat across to the magical isle of the Holm of Papay. This will give us more coastline to explore\, as well as the rare opportunity to visit one of Orkney’s finest Neolithic chambered cairns. Back on Papay itself\, there will be more archaeology to see\, whilst we can’t look at Papay’s sea and shore without appreciating the wildlife on land too\, from Scottish Primrose (Primula scotica) which will be in the middle of its second flowering to the first autumn migrants\, as golden plovers and other birds start to filter south from the Arctic. \nIf the mackerel are in\, there will be a chance of sea-fishing\, which may provide the basis for one of our evening meals\, while crab or lobster will be on the menu another evening. As with all Papay Wildlife Club holidays\, vegetarian options will also be available! \nPrice: £545 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: Seabirds for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Soak in the island atmosphere while learning about the rich range of birds that breed around our coasts. Papay is the perfect place for this\, thanks to the diversity and accessibility of the local seabird population.\nThis holiday is for everyone who enjoys birds\, whether you have been birding for a few years\, or if you are an absolute beginner who just wants to know more. Papay has a small colony of Razorbills\, Guillemots\, Puffins and Shags. You will also see the statue commemorating the tragic demise of the last breeding pair of Great Auk in Britain\, which were killed here in 1812 and 1813. Tysties (Black Guillemots) abound around the coast of Papay\, and Great Skuas (Bonxies)\, Arctic Skuas\, Sandwich Terns\, Arctic Terns\, Kittiwakes\, Gannets\, Eiders\, Red-breasted Mergansers and a host of wader species can all be guaranteed. \nIf the weather allows\, we shall see if we can get to the uninhabited Holm of Papay. Another special element of this holiday is a visit to Westray\, to see Puffins at Castle o’ Burrian and the huge seabird city on Noup Cliffs. There are thousands of auks and Kittiwakes nesting at Noup\, as well as the spectacle of Orkney’s only accessible Gannet colony. \nFlowers will be at their peak during this holiday\, and will not be ignored. As with the Papay Wildlife Club holidays\, knowledge of the full breadth of Papay’s wildlife – from flies and fungi to seals and dolphins – will be on hand. Each evening there will be sessions on bird identification\, wildlife talks or another gentle guided walk\, or you may prefer time to yourself on the long summer evenings. \nPrice: £545 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: Papay's rainforest
DESCRIPTION:The maritime heath of North Hill – a one-inch high sward of flowers\, of global conservation importance – will be celebrated on this Papay Wildlife Club holiday. Appreciation of the likes of Scottish Primrose (Primula scotica) will be complemented by time to study Papa Westray’s seabird cliffs and perhaps even a visit to the Holm of Papay.\nThe coastal heathland of North Hill is a very special environment. The wind and salt-clipped vegetation is home to the Scottish Primrose which should be at the height of its first flowering during this holiday – this rare plant is found nowhere else other than a few special spots around Orkney and the far north coast of Scotland. \nOther specialities include Spring Squill and Foula Eyebright. Here and there\, Creeping Willow is found amongst the other dwarf shrubs\, and as you go further from the sea\, Mountain Everlasting can be found. Arctic Skuas and Bonxies (Great Skuas) breed across the moorland\, as do Dunlin. Time will also be spent on the contrasting dwarf vegetation on the lime-rich sand at Links of Moclett (Papay’s characterful golf course). Adder’s-tongue Fern\, orchids\, Common Milkwort and Limestone Bedstraw are amongst the species which occur here. \nSeabird cliffs will also be a focus. Fowl Craig on North Hill has a small colony of Razorbills\, Guillemots\, Puffins and Shags\, as well as a touching statue commemorating the tragic demise of the last breeding pair of Great Auk in Britain\, which were killed here in 1812 and 1813. Tysties (Black Guillemots) abound around the coast of Papay. A wealth of other birdlife is found around the island\, with this early June holiday being at the height of the breeding season. \nIf the weather allows\, we shall see if we can get to the uninhabited Holm of Papay. This very special and rarely-visited place is a favourite of Dixe Wills\, author of Tiny Islands: 60 Remarkable Little Worlds Around Britain. The islet’s wildlife includes another maritime heath speciality\, the Small Adder’s-tongue\, as well as one of Orkney’s finest Neolithic chambered cairns. \nAs with all Papay Wildlife Club events\, knowledge of the full breadth of Papay’s wildlife – from beetles and mosses to seals and dolphins – will be on hand. Each evening there will be talks on seasonal wildlife and identification sessions\, another gentle guided walk\, or you may prefer time to yourself on the long spring evenings. \nPrice: £545 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: Arrival of the terns
DESCRIPTION:The Arctic Terns known locally as Pickies are a much-loved feature of Papa Westray. Whilst the Pickies are the main focus for this break\, the dates couldn’t be better for seeing a range of other wonderful wildlife.\nThe first Arctic Terns are traditionally seen in Papay on the first day of haar (a blanket of mist which can sweep across Orkney from the North Sea on spring easterly winds) in the first full week of May. In recent years\, the number of Arctic Terns breeding on Papay has been in the hundreds\, rather than the thousands which the island used to have\, part of a widespread worrying decline around the north-east Atlantic. \nYou’ll hear something of the ecology of the terns\, and the reasons behind their decline. Other changes in the island’s bird population will also be remembered\, from the colonisation of Swallows to the decline of the Corncrake. Will there be any Corncrakes in Papay this spring? \nThe sight of the terns is meant to be the highlight of this Papay Wildlife Club holiday. However\, rival attractions include skuas\, Puffins and other auks\, the first flowering of the Scottish Primrose (Primula scotica)\, the chance of scarce migrants such as Bluethroat en route to Scandinavia or even the outside possibility of an early record of Basking Shark\, Orca or Minke Whale. And all this will have a backdrop of clifftops sprinkled with Spring Squill and fields full of noisy breeding waders. \nEach evening there will be short talks and identification sessions. We’ll immerse ourselves in the world of the Arctic Tern – the world’s greatest migrant – as well as learning so much more about the huge range of spring wildlife for which Papay is famous. \nPrice: £495 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: Awakening from Winter
DESCRIPTION:April offers the tail end of winter wildlife\, with the excitement of the very start of spring migration and a fresh\, breezy look at the habitats of Papay as the soil slowly begins to warm and the short summer is in the offing.\nThis is a seasonal look at the island\, at the best time for seeing Great Northern Divers and Tysties coming into summer plumage\, and as the Long-tailed Duck numbers start to build up. Wildfowl will be moving north. The first Bonxies (Great Skuas) will be arriving to prospect their breeding territories on North Hill and Sandwich Terns arrive back at their colony this month. \nAs a time of change\, this season always offers the chance of surprises\, alongside the promise of our year-round residents\, from Eiders and Rock Pipits to Common & Grey Seals. No aspect of wildlife will be ignored\, so anything is possible\, from Otters to cetaceans\, and expertise will be on hand to look at everything from lichens to the inhabitants of the \nThe very first spring flowers should be coming into bloom. The leaf rosettes of Primula scotica (Scottish Primrose) should be on show. Mosses will be showing fresh growth\, and annual plants will be sprouting to fill their short-lived niches. \nPapa Westray is small and perfectly-formed. It has treasures to be found on every day of the year. Come and join us for a celebration of the very beginning of spring. \nEach evening there will be talks on seasonal wildlife and identification sessions. We will also keep an eye on the skies\, which are still nice and dark in April\, in case the ‘merry dancers’ (Aurora Borealis) make an appearance. \nPrice: £495 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:British Science Week: Papay Shoreline Research Station
DESCRIPTION:Papa Westray is one of the most northerly isles of the Orkney archipelago\, being a low level island\, climate change and rising sea levels are a very real factor in the lives of the people who live here. We aim through this project and other associated events to raise awareness of our relation to the sea and the changes happening within it.\nOn the shore at South Wick we will set up a temporary Papay shoreline research station\, a centre for island habitat information gathering. From our temporary base a group of island diy scientists will set out to investigate and survey the shoreline in exciting and fun ways.\n– Using kite cameras we will get an overview of the shore\, a birds eye view of the moving tide.\n– Timelapse cameras will document the movement of the sea and its relation to the shore and the seaweed within it\, throughout the day.\n– Our diy scientists will be fully equipped with an artist designed science pack to assist them in their research\, hand lenses\, field guides\, measuring equipment\, sample jars all a diy scientist would need.\n– As the tide comes in we will use underwater cameras to capture some of the marine life along the shore\, including fish\, seals and the wakening of the seaweed.\n– Using archive maps of Papay we will attempt to measure the rate of sea level rise along this particular shore using historic sites and crofts as reference points.\nEncouraging dialogue between age groups on the island.\nAll of the research data collected will be shown in an exhibition on the island and available to view online. \nThis workshop will be lead by Saoirse Higgins\, artist\, in collaboration with Jonathan Ford the Papay Ranger and Papa Westray Development Trust. \nNo booking required. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: The Compleat Naturalist
DESCRIPTION:Discover the full breadth of biodiversity in expert company. Hone your fieldcraft and identification skills at a surprising time of year\, where the simplicity of the island enables a rarified insight into the full diversity of life.\nCan you read habitats\, and spot plants from their leaves? Have you ever wanted to know what that lichen or moss was? What’s under that stone? How can I have the best chance of seeing Otters? \nWhilst our February ‘slow circuit’ Papay Wildlife Club holiday focuses on sense of place\, and quiet immersion\, this holiday offers a similar experience with a firm slant towards putting names to Papay’s rich variety of wildlife. We are sure you will never see the countryside in winter the same way again\, and will leave with heightened identification skills. \nThe Compleat Naturalist will look across the spectrum\, from lower plants and lichens\, to winter-flowering plants and the sweep of habitats from wild maritime heath to sand dune\, marsh and lochside. Birds\, beetles (‘gablos’ in the local vernacular) and flies (‘matlos’) will not escape our enquiring minds. We’ll study everything from Grey and Common Seals to the smallest of creatures to be found in the cornucopia that Papay offers. \nEach evening there will be a short introductory talk on an aspect of identifying island wildlife\, along with an identification sessions\, looking through books and keys\, and studying photographs and specimens. We will also keep an eye on the skies\, in case the ‘merry dancers’ (Aurora Borealis) make an appearance. \nPrice: £495 per person. £50 Single Supplement. \nFor further information and booking please contact Jonathan Ford (Papay Ranger). \nTel – 01856 252028. SUMMARY:Papay Wildlife Club: The slow circuit of Papay
DESCRIPTION:Papa Westray is a place to take your time. Join us to walk the coast\, lose yourself in the wilds of Papay’s North Hill\, take a pilgrimage around the loch and immerse yourself in a world of winter wildlife. \nWe’ll come across a wide range of waders & wildfowl\, including Tysties\, Great Northern Divers and Red-breasted Mergansers. Grey and Common Seals always deserve attention. Our resident Otters are notoriously elusive\, but we will be looking carefully. \nShould the sea state be calm\, we’ll wrap up warm and watch in hope of passing Risso’s Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises. The drama of a winter storm could be an invigorating highlight. \nWe will get to all corners of the island\, but this is not a holiday where covering ground is the main objective.
